When To Refer Someone To A Professional Therapist

Publication Date:
March 24, 2014

Every one of us has had the experience of trying to help a close friend or family member through a difficult time. We have also been on the receiving end of comfort, advice and help from others who care about us. When you are trying to help someone cope with a difficulty in life, how do you know when it is time to suggest that they seek additional help?

Here are some signs that it might be time:

  • When you keep thinking, this is going on too long...
  • When you have the thought, they really ought to be getting a little better by now...
  • When you feel like you are working harder to get them better than they are...
  • When you really are beginning to dread their phone call...
  • When you seem to keep giving the same advice over and over and you can tell they are too stuck to make a decision or get any traction...
  • When you find that it is stirring up too many of your own issues...
  • When you have said everything you can think to say, again and again, and nothing changes...
  • When you can tell they are deteriorating and getting worse...
  • When your family starts complaining that this is taking too much of your time...
  • When your gut keeps telling you that this issue it is greater than what you can handle...
  • When they say they don’t want to be here anymore...
  • When nothing you say seems to give them any hope...
  • When they have lost all interest in things that used to be enjoyable...
  • When you think they are being abused on some way...
  • When they are down, sad or nervous most of the time...
  • When you have trouble sleeping because of your worry or concern about their condition...

We all need good friends and family who will walk with us through difficult times. We also need to be that kind of friend to others. Sometimes the BEST thing we can do for a friend is to send that friend to someone who is equipped to help him/her. While this may feel like we are letting them down – because we are not able to help them ourselves – there are times that it is the BEST and wisest advice and help that we can give.
